Students of Twin Towns Oranienburg and Kfar Yona Commemorate Holocaust Together in Zikaron Basalon
On the occasion of the International Holocaust Remembrance Day 2024, 11th grade students from “Ish Shalom” school in Kfar Yona and their counterparts at the “Georg Mendheim” high school in Oranienburg met online four days later on January 31 for a Zikaron Basalon – an event format for commemoration of the Holocaust. They followed a powerful and fascinating story told by Yehuda Handler, a second-generation Holocaust survivor who lives in Kfar Yona and whose parents were saved thanks to their membership in Schindler's list.
The meeting was attended by the Mayor of Oranienburg Michal Graf, Director of the Education Department Ziv David, Principal of "Ish Shalom" high school Einat Kenninger, the history teacher, the initiator of the meeting and the coordinator of the Zikaron BaSalon memorial project in the Sharon region Oksana Spon, coordinator of the social education team in the upper division, and the educational team at "Georg Mendheim" high school.
Eyewitness talks like this are part of the shared experiences of the partner schools. In view of the current security situation, the pupils from Oranienburg and Kfar Yona can only meet virtually at the moment. Since the start of the "Iron Swords" war, the city of Oranienburg has stood up for the State of Israel, with demonstrations of solidarity and appearances in the German media.
